P

Polynesian voyagers, without the aid of a compass, navigated over 2,000 miles of open ocean nearly 1,000 years before Columbus. Relying on the migratory patterns of sea birds, varied coloration in the clouds, debris floating on the water, and the scent of exposed reefs, ancient mariners accurately directed their large double-hulled canoes to the Hawaiian Islands. Scientists believe that early migrations to Hawai‘i originated from the Marquesas Islands, Raiatea in the Society Islands, and Samoa during the eleventh and twelfth centuries.

P is also for petroglyph, an ancient drawing etched into lava rock and stone. The Hawaiians called these images ki‘i phaku, which means “stone carving.” Petroglyphs are usually found in clusters like those on the Big Island in a place called Puak, and near an old lighthouse on the island of Lna‘i. There are images of men, women, and children surfing, hunting, running, dancing, marching, traveling, and fishing. There are also little holes cut out of the rock where parents placed the umbilical cords of their newborns for good luck.

P is for the Polynesians

Polynesian explorers braved the open sea.

Traveling through wind and blinding sun, they discovered Hawai‘i.
